Ready for Vital Signs?
Taking the BP
To take a blood pressure, the person should be sitting comfortably and relaxed. Sleeves are pushed up or the shirt removed to reveal a naked arm as clothing can interfere with the pressure of the inflated cuff. The cuff of the sphygmomanometer is placed on the upper arm. It is centered over the brachial artery which is located in the crook of the elbow. The gauge should be placed so it can be easily read. There is usually a place on the cuff to clip it on. Once the cuff is secured, raise the arm to heart level, place your arm underneath it to support it and ask the person to relax their arm. Palpate (feel for) the brachial pulse and place the diaphragm of the stethoscope over this spot. Place the ear pieces on the stethoscope into your ears. Listen to the brachial pulse. Close the valve on the bladder of the cuff and begin to squeeze the bulb. Continue squeezing until the needle on the gauge reads at least 180 or until it is 10mmHg above where you last heard the pulse as you inflated the cuff. Some people cannot hear this and so it is usually pumped up to 180-200mmHg on the gauge. Open the valve slowly and allow the cuff to deflate by 5mmHg/second while you listen to the artery. When you first hear the Karotkoff sound this is the systolic pressure. Continue deflating the cuff until you no longer hear the Karotkoff sound. This is the diastolic pressure. At this point you can open the valve completely to allow the cuff to deflate rapidly. If you did not hear clearly, wait at least one minute before repeating the procedure.Read more at Suite101: Vital Signs: Blood Pressure: How to take a blood pressure http://www.suite101.com/content/vital-signs--blood-pressure-a9840#ixzz14voR3F9z

TIME TO SHINE !!!!
Make sure you take really good care of your uniform. Be ready, head to toe tomorrow. I know you all will look fantastic!
Thank you Nicole S. and Ashley - great job today! I love classroom managers...but you know that already.
Reminders !!!
Have you memorized your Social Security number? Another idea is to encode it to look like a phone number in your cell phone. The SS# has 9 digits, so come up with a 10 digit code (area code and phone number) that is your SS# backward, or one digit off the real thing. Come up with something (like a secret code in your note section of your phone) that would never be deciphered by anyone. Get help from a parent with this. Do not carry your SS card with you.
Hey....CHECK THIS OUT: http://flashcards.dictionary.com/learn/viewtopic/Anatomy
IF YOU DO......and bring me evidence of your analysis - you get 20 points of EC !!!!

Keeping an Open Mind? I Certainly Hope So !
You all did really well during our discussion of open-mindedness and the "circle of control". Let's remember that you have a choice about what you say and do, not what OTHERS say and do!
Hey....Ben! Hey......Dominique! I apologize for not giving you recognition as classroom managers on last night's blog. Thank you both for working hard yesterday and keeping your teacher organized.

Watch for something that is "too good to be true". TYPE TWO full paragraphs on what the product is, what it allegedly does, and whether or not it works! I'd love your opinion of the advertising as the last sentence of the 2nd paragraph. ATTACH the downloaded info, the article from a magazine or the details of the television advertisement. You must tell me if the product is reputable and proven to work.
Practice your scenario-based role plays with a family member or friend. Be ready to educate your patient or client....that's me! Teach me all about the condition, disease, etc.

I hope everything comes out all right.....
Thank you Krista, Caterina, Emmad and Giulianna....I really appreciate all of your help and being wonderful classroom managers.
Did you get my joke in the blog title? Yes, we talked about the digestive system today. What are some things all nurses and doctors in traning should know about the digestive systems of infants, children and adults? Well, we should all be "going" one or two times per day, that's for sure! We learned today that if waste product does not leave the body as it should, it can cause infection and other problems. We also learned that simple changes in diet can help us "go" easily, without too much effort. We know what that can do to us, right? Ouch.
Congratulations to all that responded to my request for definitions of "borborgymus" and "flatulence". I will give you examples of these tomorrow. Yeah....you'll see...or is it hear? :/ You'll all get 5 points of extra credit.
Tonight: Finish MTP #3 ! Pleeeease do not wait until tomorrow...this assignment requires time and effort, as it will become your script for the scenario-based role-play. Make this count. Patient education will be one of your greatest skills out in the field. See me for props if needed.
Tomorrow: Blood Drive participants at GHS...please get to class as soon as possible. Thank you to all of the volunteers. That's great...and certificate worthy!
RED CROSS CLUB at GHS: Meeting in Ms. Miller's room - S2 - tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
PM: Think ahead...anticipate the need - ask your teacher and a parent for WRITTEN permission regarding the 10/11 meeting on "Cancer Survivorship" from 11:30 to 12:30 at Valley Care Medical Plaza (it's not at the hospital, but near there). Get this in advance please and let me know if you are going. Do not attempt to get permission if it jeopardizes your other class (es) in any way. Especially if you have a test! There will be plenty of future meetings offered. See me and I'll give you a flyer.
See you tomorrow and we'll work more on the digestive system....and more.

Tomorrow...we start using our stethascopes and we'll listen to rumblings in the abdomen...hmmm...care to find the definitions of: borborgymus and flatulence?

So Many Professions--So Little Time!
Thanks again to my classroom managers for today, Kamal and Lexi M.
Also, special thanks to Kalo for her fabulous graphic work!
Regarding progress reports and grades, I will report this information directly to each school. It will not show up on your school websites.
We're going to see a movie tomorrow about MEN IN NURSING. For the men in the class, keep an open mind to your opportunities. And by the way, nursing isn't just for women anymore.

Learning a New Language
You are learning the language of medical terminology and you're off to a great start. Be patient, soon you will be recognizing medical words on a regular basis.
On Wednesday we will continue working on the 3x5 cards so make sure you have enough cards/colors.
Thank you Madhy and Elissa for being my classroom managers today. Good job!
Excellent work and thanks to the committee for the Good News Bears. I heard a lot of great ideas and I know all of you will do a great job. Also, a big thank you to the students planning on attending the CMAA conference. And don't forget that I would appreciate anyone willing to volunteer with helping for or at the event. Let me know if you are interested!
You know what? I don't think many of you are going to need very much guidance on professionalism and the ESLR's. I think you really get it. This is important work folks and I'm sure you'll all be great interns.
DO YOU or YOUR FAMILY HAVE ANY USED, CLEAN JEWELRY? I will be selling it at the conference for our charities and the East Bay Region of CMAA. Please make sure it is not in need of repair. I will take watches that need batteries. I'll need some folks to coordinate the jewelry sale at the conference too. Please bring it in a ZIP LOCK BAG. Thanks!
Check out studystack.com tonight and we will talk more about it tomorrow. Don't forget!

Welcome to Week 2
Great job with your ASL demonstrations today! You really did well and trying is half the battle! Keep practicing, just like you will with your medical terminology.
Thank you Nicole F., Cristina, Lexi B. and Vivianne for being Classroom Managers today!
PARENTS: Please save the date - Wednesday 9/15 - Back to School Night at GHS
(Medical Occupations - Room S4) Time will be announced.
Please note: If some of the student's parents in the PM class cannot make it due to other BTSN's happening the same evening, I'll understand, but please try to make it, even if it is for part of the evening. I'll be here in the classroom from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Just in case a parent wants to visit early and cannot make it during the evening hours, ask them to call me for an appointment. I want to meet with all parents.
Do you have site information for me? Do you know anyone that can take a student intern or two? Please write down the info and I will contact them myself. Thank you!
Fill your calendar with important dates that affect this class. Very important - let me know about those events when we do our calendar sync.
Check out that WISH LIST. Are there any donations coming our way for the classroom?

What a Nice First Week !
Happy Friday ~Keep up the good work everyone and keep smiling. I am so impressed with your motivation and commitment to the program. I am also pleased with your interest in the CMAA conference and the Good News Bears Program. By the way, the water sales are going well and I expect to have enough shopping money to buy the presents for the teens at holiday time. I will send some of you bargain shoppers out there with the money. Imagine a teen getting a gift after just leaving their home and living in a shelter. Think about them receiving a nice stuffed animal to call their own. Compassion is the hallmark of a good health care worker...don't you think?
Thank you Kellie, Caterina, Dominique and Alex for being Classroom Managers today.
Thanks again to all of my traveling students from LHS, DHS, AVHS and FHS. You are doing such a great job getting to class. I will brag to your school career counselors today.
The ASL demos were postponed until Monday. Be ready please and feel comfortable enough to sign your first and last name, and a short statement or question using the signs on your sheet.
DON'T FORGET: 3 x 5 cards in four colors, at least 50 of each color and a ziplock bag with rubber bands or rings to put them on.
Tell your parents you were good at school.
Have a great weekend.

Can you hear me? Maybe not!
We learned today not to yell at a deaf person...it doesn't do a lot of good, does it? Practice finger spelling your first and last name. Tomorrow you will demonstrate sign language for the class that involves spelling your name as well as a question or a statement to a patient in a clinical setting.
Thank you Krista and Haley....Great job today! I love classroom managers.
Reminders for tomorrow:
CMAA Conference registration form or go to http://www.cmaa-ca.org/ Due tomorrow!
Medical Alert paper is due tomorrow, typed and ready to turn in when you arrive.
Bring in 3 x 5 cards - 4 colors- about fifty or more of each color - ziplock/rubber band. We start working on the cards Monday.
Review the professionalism rubric and prepare for discussion.
Remember to contact your school and my classroom number of absences, before class starts!
The blog is usually posted no later than 5:00 or so. Check back if necessary.
When leaving a message for me, push the # sign on your phone as soon as you hear my voice on voicemail. That will take you right to the "BEEP".
Congratulations PM class - PERFECT attendance today! Woo Hoo!
Binder tabs for class: Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Pathology, ESLR's. That's it for now. I STRONGLY recommend you have binder tabs or have an excellent system of organization.
Warning.....there are several of you that did not turn in blog homework or turned it in late. Due to it being our first week, I understand. But from here on out...make sure you are turning in your work on time. Thank you.
Have a great evening and keep the bears and stuffed animals coming!

Give Me A Sign

Tuesday, August 24, 2010
Hello Future Medical Professionals !
Review all materials from class today and have them tomorrow, organized in your binder. Please bring back your strategies for success, signed by you, the student. Review the "Very Wise Words" and prepare for an in-class assignment on that tomorrow. Buy 3 x 5 cards as soon as you can and a ring or container for them - four colors, about 50 of each color. Print out calendars from Sept. 2010 to Dec. 2010 for your binder.
For the PM class only -please bring in your EMERGENCY card if you have not done so already.Make sure it is signed by a parent.
Does someone you know have a potential student internship site for one or more students? Please contact me via email or phone with the name, address and phone/email of the contact person. Thank you!
THANK YOU Joseph and Emmad for a job well done! I don't know what I would do without my classroom managers. I appreciate you giving me more time to teach.
Keep working on your assignment due Friday, 8/27 on the Medic Alert information.
HOMEWORK FOR TONIGHT: This homework is for you AND your parent(s)!!!! Ask a parent to look at this blog tonight. Tell them they can access it whenever they like. With your parent, write down three ways we can anticipate our own needs and the needs of others. How can one plan well to make life, work or school easier and more efficient? Bring in your ideas (at least three) written neatly on a piece of binder paper tomorrow and hand it directly to me when you walk in. Remember.....Anticipate the Need! This assignment is worth 10 points.
Have a great evening,
~Mrs. Erceg

Welcome to Medical Occupations!
This blog is your connection to classroom news and graded homework. Please bookmark this blog on your computer at home and check it every night to stay in touch with requirements for the course. If you are unable to access the Internet...call a friend and ask what is on the blog. This is your responsibility!
Your first assignment is due Friday 8/27....interview friends and family...do they have any of the conditions on the medic alert material? Do they take medications? Do they have allergies? How about special conditions that need specific medical attention? Look online for more information and bring it in to class to share. Type up three paragraphs on what a medic alert bracelet/necklace is, what conditions justify wearing one and then who in your life (maybe you) needs one. How will you communicate the importance of having one in a clear, concise way?Print out your work and bring to class. Do not email your assignment to me.
I'm sure you will find at least one person (maybe even yourself) that would benefit from a medic alert bracelet or necklace. Remember - take the time to order one and you'll save a lot of time in an emergency. These save lives every day. Just ask an EMT, Firefighter, Paramedic or an Emergency Room nurse or physician.
Please bring to class: Clean, gently used teddy bears and stuffed animals - Let's impress our guest speaker from Good News Bears on Friday with all that we have collected.
PM CLASS: Please bring in your emergency form, signed by a parent.
Thank you Ben and Kacey for being classroom managers today. You were a big help.
~Mrs. Erceg
